The Inn Way

The Inn Way to Northumberland Long Distance Walk 94 miles, 48 pubs..

The Inn Way to Northumberland is a long-distance circular walking route, part of a series created by award winning author, freelance writer and independent publisher Mark Reid.

Starting at the lovely village of Rothbury, the route follows the Coquet Valley to Warkworth before turning north up the spectacular Northumberland coast. Beyond Alnmouth the route winds through the quiet coastal villages of Boulmer, Craster and Low Newton-by-the-Sea, passing the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle on the way.

After the golden sands of Beadnell Bay and its quaint harbour, the trail heads north to the bustling village of Seahouses then onwards across farmland offering superb views of the Farne Islands and stunning Bamburgh Castle. Beyond Bamburgh and Budle Point the route heads inland to Belford before continuing west past the Kyloe Ridge to the town of Wooler, ‘the Gateway to the Cheviots’. From Wooler the route meanders south through the Cheviot Hills to the picturesque village of Alwinton, whilst the final stage rejoins the River Coquet and returns to Rothbury.

There are 48 pubs along the Inn Way. Each ‘day stage’ is designed to include a pub at lunchtime and the overnight stops offer a choice of pubs and facilities. Stage 5 from Wooler to Alwinton doesn’t include a pub along the way as the route heads through the impressively remote Cheviot Hills.

Most people choose to complete the walk in 6 days

However some prefer to take longer, enjoying the wealth of historical interest and magnificent scenery en route.

  • Rothbury to Warkworth – 17.5 miles
  • Warkworth to Embleton – 15 miles
  • Embleton to Bamburgh – 11 miles
  • Bamburgh to Wooler – 16 miles
  • Wooler to Alwinton – 20.5 miles
  • Alwinton to Rothbury – 14 miles

What Our Customer’s Say About Us

A belated but no less heartfelt thanks for making our trip so wonderful!! Your service was impeccable and enabled us to thoroughly enjoy our journey without any worry!  The drivers who moved our luggage were terrific if and when we saw them. Otherwise it seemed like magic, our bags just disappeared and reappeared for us. What a way to travel.

Thank you again for all your help, for answering my endless emails and for making our trip literally seamless and ridiculously easy.  The only thing we had to do was the walking part!! and not having to worry about anything but that made it so much fun!
